VRF and VRV: The Same Technology, Different Brand Names
VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) and VRV (Variable Refrigerant Volume) essentially refer to the same technology. The name VRV is a trademark belonging to Daikin, while other manufacturers (Mitsubishi, Samsung, LG, Toshiba, etc.) market the same technology under the name VRF. The principle is the same in both: a single outdoor unit is connected to dozens of indoor units through a copper pipe network, and each zone can be controlled independently.
How Does a VRF System Work?
The heart of the system is a high-capacity inverter compressor. The electronic expansion valve in the outdoor unit measures, in real time, the heating or cooling demand of each indoor unit at any given moment and precisely adjusts the refrigerant gas flow accordingly. As a result, no zone is cooled or heated more than necessary; every watt of energy is sent to exactly where it is needed.

1. High Energy Efficiency
VRF systems consume 20–40% less energy than conventional chiller + fan-coil systems. Their COP (Coefficient of Performance) values range between 3.5 and 5.0; that is, for every 1 kWh of electricity used, 3.5–5.0 kWh of cooling or heating energy is produced.
2. Simultaneous Heating and Cooling (Heat Recovery)
In heat-recovery (HR) VRF systems, cooling can be carried out in one zone while heating takes place in another at the same time. The waste heat extracted from the cooled zone is transferred free of charge to the zone that needs heating. This feature provides significant energy savings, especially in buildings with different façades and in mixed-use structures.
3. Long Pipe-Run Capability
Standard split air conditioners are limited to a pipe run of at most 30–40 meters. In VRF systems this distance can extend up to 1,000 meters. This makes it possible to air-condition all the floors of a building with a single outdoor unit.
4. Independent Zone Control
Each indoor unit can be set independently with its own thermostat and remote control. When integrated with a central BMS (Building Management System), the entire system can be monitored and managed from a single point.
5. Flexible Architectural Design
Cassette, wall-mounted, concealed-duct, floor-standing and ceiling-suspended indoor unit options adapt to any architectural design. The outdoor unit can be positioned compactly on the roof or on a side façade.
