Choosing the Right AC: BTU Calculation, Types and Buying Guide 2025

Choosing an air conditioner with the wrong capacity or one that does not suit your needs means both inadequate comfort and unnecessary energy expenditure. In this guide you will find all the technical and practical criteria to consider when buying an AC in 2025.

Types of Air Conditioners: Which Is Right for You?

Split (Wall-Type) Air Conditioner

This is the most widely used type of air conditioner in Turkey. The indoor unit is mounted on the wall and the outdoor unit is placed outside the building. Installation is required, but it offers advantages in terms of energy efficiency and aesthetics. Ideal for cooling/heating a single room.

Multi-Split Air Conditioner

A system that feeds multiple indoor units from a single outdoor unit. Ideal for those who want to control several rooms independently while meeting this need with a single outdoor unit. Installation cost is high; however, it provides economic and aesthetic advantages in the long run.

Cassette-Type Air Conditioner

This system, mounted inside a suspended ceiling, is preferred for large open offices, stores, and restaurants. It provides homogeneous temperature distribution in large spaces with 4-way air discharge.

Ducted (Concealed) Air Conditioner

The indoor unit is hidden in the ceiling space and air is distributed to spaces through ducts. The best choice for those who want an invisible system and do not want to compromise the aesthetics of their home or office. Can be integrated with central ventilation.

BTU Calculation: How Many BTUs Do You Need?

BTU (British Thermal Unit) is the unit of an air conditioner's cooling/heating capacity. Choosing the wrong-capacity AC causes serious problems: an oversized unit creates a humid and uncomfortable environment by frequently cycling on and off (short cycling), while an undersized unit can never reach the desired temperature.

Basic BTU Calculation Formula

The generally accepted rule: 500–600 BTU per square metre. For example, 10,000–12,000 BTU is sufficient for a 20 m² room. However, there are factors that adjust this calculation: a sunny room (+10%), top floor (+15%), kitchen (add +20% for efficiency loss), frequent occupancy (+600 BTU per additional person).

  • 10–15 m²: 9,000 BTU (small room, bedroom)
  • 15–25 m²: 12,000 BTU (medium room, living room)
  • 25–35 m²: 18,000 BTU (large living room or open plan)
  • 35–50 m²: 24,000 BTU (wide open area or office)

Features to Look for When Buying an AC in 2025

Energy Class (A+++ or above)

As of 2025, the vast majority of air conditioners sold in Turkey belong to the A+ class and above. An A+++ unit consumes approximately 30–40% less electricity than an A-class unit. Although the initial purchase price appears higher, energy savings quickly close this gap.

Wi-Fi and Smart Home Integration

Wi-Fi-enabled air conditioners can be controlled remotely via a smartphone app. Integration with home automation systems (Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit) makes energy management easier.

Air Filtration and Air Quality

Models with HEPA filters or ion generators improve indoor air quality by filtering out pollen, dust, and bacteria. This feature is of great importance for people with allergies or asthma.

Refrigerant Type (R32 or R410A)

R32 refrigerant has a lower global warming potential (GWP) than R410A and is the modern standard preferred in line with EU directives. R32-gas models are recommended for those making environmentally friendly choices.

AC Installation: Why Is Professional Installation Essential?

Improper installation can have serious consequences such as gas leaks, water seepage, performance loss, and warranty cancellation. Correct installation depends on copper pipe length calculation, slope adjustment, power cable cross-section, and outdoor unit placement. All these procedures must be carried out by certified and experienced technicians. Contact us to benefit from both correct product selection and professional installation services.
