Winter Maintenance Guide: Preparing Your Heat-Pump Air Conditioner for the Cold Season
The vast majority of modern inverter air conditioners can also be used as heaters in winter thanks to heat-pump technology. But is your unit, which has run in cooling mode all summer, ready for winter heating? September–October maintenance gives a clear answer to that question and prevents surprise breakdowns throughout the winter.
Why Does a Heat Pump Need Winter Maintenance?
In cooling mode, the refrigerant gas absorbs heat in the indoor unit and expels it outside. In heating mode this cycle is reversed: heat is taken from the outdoor air and transferred inside. During this changeover, the refrigerant gas, the four-way valve, the outdoor-unit fan motor and the outdoor coil system encounter different conditions. Problems missed during summer maintenance reveal themselves in heating mode.
6 Checks to Carry Out Before Winter
1. Four-Way Valve Test
The four-way valve is a critical component that allows the system to switch between cooling and heating modes. If the valve is sticking or leaking, the unit cannot switch to heating mode properly or loses efficiency in both modes. It must always be tested during pre-winter maintenance.
2. Outdoor-Unit Defrost Cycle Check
In cold and humid weather, ice builds up on the surface of the outdoor coil. The air conditioner's automatic defrost cycle kicks in to melt this ice. If the defrost cycle is not working, the outdoor unit ices up quickly and the heating capacity drops to zero. The correct operation of this cycle is vital for winter performance.
3. Outdoor-Unit Crankcase Heater
Many inverter air conditioners have a small electric heater built into the compressor body to keep the oil–refrigerant mixture warm during long idle periods. During winter maintenance, you should check whether this heater is active; otherwise the compressor may be damaged on a cold start.
4. Checking Refrigerant Pressure in Winter Mode
The gas pressure values in cooling mode differ from those in heating mode. During winter maintenance, the technician runs the unit in heating mode, takes manifold readings and confirms that the pressure values comply with the manufacturer's standards.
5. Assessing the Outdoor Unit's Location for Winter Conditions
If the outdoor unit sits under an eave where snow or ice can accumulate, it may repeatedly slip out of alignment. If the outdoor unit is floor-mounted, it is recommended to place it on a platform raised 30–40 cm to guard against snow build-up. In locations exposed to high winds, a deflector panel can be considered.
6. Are the Filter and Indoor Unit Ready for Heating?
The dust that builds up over the summer has the same effect in heating mode: it restricts airflow and forces the unit to work harder than necessary. Pre-winter filter cleaning and indoor-unit maintenance are the foundation of efficient heating throughout the winter.
